Forest & Logging Companies Reduce Waste With the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)
Worthwhile’s Routing Software Saves Time, Fuel, Money...and the Planet
Trees come down. Trees go on trucks. Trucks go to sawmills.
Potential transportation problems:
- Sawmill unexpectedly closed for maintenance
- 2+ hour wait to unload (and get paid)
- Lost profits: factoring in driving distance and wait time, which sawmill will take the least amount of truck fuel and labor cost?
Transportation & Logistics Software
The problem was clear. But the solution required continuous innovation.
In South Carolina, around 800 forestry and logging trucks are active each day. Without access to the sawmills themselves, the local logging industry banded together to crowdsource data, help each other, increase profits, and reduce carbon emissions (fewer idling trucks, less wasted miles/trips).
Worthwhile created a novel solution to both crafting and visualizing new data. It all started with collecting data from multiple sources - both by building (in house) GPS trackers that stay with truck, and by integrating with the top GPS telematics providers on the market. Through a consistent series of software sprints and tests with truckers on the road and in the woods, we built an MVP and iterated on it. The result was so innovative that it received recognition as a cutting-edge sustainability solution while giving logging companies the change to realize $4000 in annual value creation and savings for each and every truck they had on the road.
